How to register a stored vehicle in the spring

Do you own a vehicle that’s been in storage for a while? Are you ready to dust it off and take it for a spin? If so, the Certified Auto Repair team will walk you through exactly what you need to know about registering your vehicle. You can’t just snap your fingers — registering a stored vehicle requires you to follow several important steps.

Administrative and legal steps: an essential part of the process

You must notify your insurer that you intend to register your vehicle before you drive it. When you stored your vehicle in the fall, your insurer probably recommended that you continue to pay for fire, vandalism and theft coverage. However, you may have temporarily suspended other coverages such as civil liability. When you decide to register your vehicle, you should immediately call your insurer to reactivate full coverage. This way you can get back on the road safely.

After, you must make an official registration request on the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) website. It’s important to note that you can only register a stored vehicle on the same day you intend to put it back on the road. Finally, make sure you have your credit card and the vehicle’s latest registration on hand. It’s not hard to do, you’ll see!

Furthermore, when you decide to register your stored vehicle with the SAAQ, you’ll have to pay the registration fee for the entire current month in full. In addition, you’ll be required to pay for any subsequent months that remain before the usual registration month.

Vehicle inspection and maintenance: essential procedures

You can’t just hop straight into your vehicle without running a few checks! It’s important that you:

  • Check all the liquids and top them up if necessary
  • Reconnect the battery
  • Reinflate the tires to the recommended pressure

In addition, it’s a good idea to air out the cab, clean the interior and exterior and apply a coat of protective wax. Finally, when you decide to hit the road, you’ll need to start off slowly and remember to test the brakes, make sure all the lights work and check for any leaks.
